The lawsuits are related to a past water contamination issue a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lejeune.marines.mil\/\">Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune<\/a> in North Carolina. Veterans who served at Camp Lejeune or MCAS New River for at least 30 cumulative days from August <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jdsupra.com\/legalnews\/the-timeline-of-the-camp-lejeune-4464690\/\">1953 through 1987<\/a> are eligible to receive health benefits for medical conditions resulting from exposure to toxic chemicals. Vets and their dependents now are able to file a civil suit against the federal government. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cancer-causing contaminants<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-link-color wp-elements-1d6779dae1f0191ffdd8fd75c3939cbe\">In 1982, the government tested the <a href=\"https:\/\/clnr.hqi.usmc.mil\/\">water supply<\/a> at the base and found <a href=\"https:\/\/cumulis.epa.gov\/supercpad\/SiteProfiles\/index.cfm?fuseaction=second.contams&amp;id=0403185\">cancer-causing contaminants<\/a>, including<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/healthy\/cancer-causes\/chemicals\/benzene.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;benzene<\/a>.  These chemicals cause&nbsp;cancer and other harmful diseases and afflictions. Illegal dumping from a local dry cleaning service and leaking fuel tanks on the base is responsible for the contamination. The water supply issue links to a long list of almost <a href=\"https:\/\/www.va.gov\/disability\/eligibility\/hazardous-materials-exposure\/camp-lejeune-water-contamination\/\">40 medical conditions<\/a> and diseases. Those conditions include: kidney cancer, liver cancer, non-Hodgkin\u2019s lymphoma, adult leukemia, multiple myeloma, Parkinson\u2019s disease, aplastic anemia, and other myelodysplastic syndromes, and bladder cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Camp Lejeune Justice Act and Honoring Our PACT Act<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/justiceforlejeune.org\/camp-lejeune-justice-act\">Camp Lejeune Justice Act of 2022<\/a>, signed into law this past August, is part of the larger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.va.gov\/resources\/the-pact-act-and-your-va-benefits\/#:~:text=The%20full%20name%20of%20the,and%20post%2D9%2F11%20eras\">Honoring Our PACT Act<\/a>. This act allows Camp Lejeune contamination victims to sue the United States government for damages. Those already receiving VA benefits or other compensation caused by the contamination still can sue and not lose benefits. Currently, approximately one million people are potentially affected and more than 17,000 filed lawsuits against the government. By filing a lawsuit, veterans, individuals, and families can obtain the compensation they deserve for their pain, suffering, and loss.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do I get started?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Those most affected by the Camp Lejuene Justice Act contamination are the veterans and their family members who lived on the base. Contractors and others providing services on the Marine base are also eligible.
